Also referred to as an iliopsoas strain, it is associated with pain in the front of the hip that increases with bending the hip up (flexing the hip), kicking and sit ups. The ilopsoas muscle is made up of 2 muscles that merge and are responsible for flexing and rotating the hip. Hip flexor strain is usually caused by a sudden increase in the intensity of an activity or from overuse of the lower extremity (the repetitive motion of bending and straightening the hip, as in running). This may lead to inflammation.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your legs and core musculature to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the hip and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat and/or ice to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
