Lateral knee pain due to irritation of the IT band which is a soft tissue structure that runs along the side of the thigh from the pelvis to the knee. It is a common injury in endurance athletes such as runners and cyclists. Irritation is caused by friction between the IT band and underlying structures as we bend and straighten the knee. IT band syndrome leads to stabbing or stinging pain along the outside of the knee, a snapping feeling over the outside of the knee as it bends and straightens, and/or swelling near the outside of the knee.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your legs and core musculature to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage to the IT Band and stretching of the hip and knee and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat and/or ice to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
