Wrist fractures due to falls happen most often when people stretch the arm straight out to catch themselves as they fall. The wrist is made up of 8 small bones called carpal bones and 2 bones in the forearm called the radius and ulna. A wrist fracture is diagnosed when any of those bones break or crack. Some wrist fractures require only casting or splinting and immobilization for a period of time to allow the bones to heal while other more serious fractures require surgery to fixate the bones.

Whether you have surgery for your fracture or not, the Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your hand, wrist and elbow to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the hand, wrist and elbow and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion of the arm and hand. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat and/or ice to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
